Most oil and gas reservoirs are much more extensive in their horizontal dimensions than in their vertical (thickness) dimension. Horizontal drilling is accomplished through the use of whipstocks, bottomhole assembly configurations, instruments to measure the path of the wellbore in three-dimensional space, data links to communicate measurements taken downhole to the surface, mud motors and special BHA components, including rotary steerable systems and drill bits. Horizontal drilling can increase the contact between the reservoir and the wellbore. As displayed in Fig. 8.5, the wells are drilled vertically until a depth that is above the shale oil reservoir is reached. This depth is usually 1000–3000 m below the surface [12]. Directional and horizontal drilling have been used to reach targets beneath adjacent lands, reduce the footprint of gas field development, increase the length of the "pay zone" in a well, deliberately intersect fractures, construct relief wells, and install utility service beneath lands where excavation is impossible or extremely expensive. Horizontal wells aren't drilled perfectly horizontally, but typically reach a near-horizontal angle of at least 80 degrees. If the drill is aimed correctly, the well will extend through a long horizontal oil or natural gas reservoir. This is more efficient than drilling multiple vertical wells into a single long reservoir. Multiple horizontal wells can be drilled from one pad and can produce more oil and gas compared to vertical wells. To get the same amount of production, multiple vertical wells would be required and each would need a new surface wellpad built. Thus, horizontal drilling allows for greater production at a much smaller surface footprint. Men in Kentucky were drilling an exploratory well for salt brine. Instead, they hit an oil well. The pressure of the gas and oil underneath the surface forced an enormous geyser into the air. This was noted to be America’s first oil well (although there are some disputes to this claim).
