African Oil Palm (Elaeis guineensis) originates from West Africa, but palm oil cultivated in many tropical regions of the world. Indonesia and Malaysia produce about 85 percent of the palm oil in the world. As its name Elaeis guineensis Jacqu. indicates, the oil palm’s original habitat is in West Africa’s tropical forests. Unlike E. guineensis , its closest relative, the American oil palm ( Elaeis oleifera (Kunth.), has never gained economic importance.
